National Closed Squash Championships get underway

The 32nd edition of the Barbados National Squash Championships sponsored by the Barbados Olympic Association got underway on Monday night, May 15th at the Barbados Squash Club.

The defending ladies champion is Karen Meakins, who will be attempting to win an unprecedented sixth successive national title. The other leading seeded players are: #2 Sonia Perkins; #3/4 Lilianna White and Cheri-Ann Parris. The defending men’s champion, Shawn Simpson, is seeded at #2 and has won the last two nationals but is expected to be severely tested by the top seed, Gavin Cumberbatch, the men’s champion in 2000, who has returned home after completing his studies at Yale University. The #3/4 seeds are old rivals Mark Sealy and Marlon White who contested the over-35 final on Saturday, May 13th, with Sealy, a 8-time former national squash champion, emerging a convincing winner.

Matches continue from 5:45 p.m. each night until Friday May 19th at the BSC. All finals will be contested from 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, May 20th.
