The silky smooth #4 seeded Jamaican, Steve Smith, defeated Barbados ? two-time defending national squash champion, Shawn Simpson , to reach the final of the 2005 Caribbee / Playfair Barbados Squash Open at the Barbados Squash Club (BSC) last night (Friday). In a pulsating Men’s ?A? semi-final the tall, rangy Simpson, who was seeded in this tournament at #5, could not get to grips with the deceptive Smith, who hit amazing winners from all parts of the court, especially on the volley and took the match in straight games 10/9 9/7 9/6 in 51 minutes. In the final Smith will face the top seed, Shawn Badrinath ( Guyana ) who dispatched the mercurial #3 seed Charlie Sonson (St. Lucia) also in straight games 9/3 9/6 9/0 in half an hour.
The two ladies semis were not that close. Top seed Karen Meakins destroyed the #3 seed Alana Simmons (St. Lucia) 9/0 9/1 9/0 in 15 minutes while the #2 seed, Karen Anderson (Jamaica) had a slightly harder match against #4 Lilianna White but prevailed comfortably 9/4 9/1 9/2 in 24 minutes.
