When the curtain came down on the Toshiba Copier Junior Squash Tournament 2003 on Saturday, the Barbadian competitors walked off with top honours in five of the nine age categories contested. Barbadians, Rhett & Bryant Cumberbatch, Nadia McCarthy, Cherie Ann Paris and Zoe Lisk claimed victory in their respective age groups.
Excellent performances by the Vincentian contingent gained them three titles ? Under 11 boys (Andres Bascombe), Under 13 girls (Sherina Slater) and Under 13 boys (Diarra Venner). Young Vincentian, Andres Bascombe was also awarded “Most Promising Player” for his win in the Under 11 and spirited play when he stepped up in the Under 13 category and won several matches. Sherina Slater, also of St Vincent continued to make her presence felt in Barbados following a Toshiba title in 2002 and a title at the Rotherley Junior Open in September. Vincentian, Diarra Venner, also chalked up his second title in Barbados this year with his Under 13 win.
Adrian Dyer of Trinidad also turned heads in the Under 15 competition, where he warded off opposition from Barbados’ Junior National Team Representatives, Liu and Nkosi Ross and Jason Cox. Dyer was the Under 13 Toshiba champion in 2002 and stepping up to a new age group still dominated the field.
Barbadian Sharu Commissiong was awarded “Most Improved Player” as he impressed organisers with his improved fitness and focus since the last competition.
The organisers, the Barbados Squash Rackets Association (BSRA), expressed gratitude to sponsor Toshiba, a faithful supporter for several years and to the 21 junior players from five countries in the region who participated in the event. Andy Gill, Senior VP, of the BSRA, noted that exposure to other styles of play was a necessity for the region?s players to progress.
