Barbados Fire & Commercial Junior National Squash Championships 2001

The Barbados Fire and Commercial Junior National Squash Championships 2001 were held at the Barbados Squash Club, Marine House Courts from Friday May 25th – 27th. It was a full weekend of squash for the juniors. The boys and girls competed in Under-11 / 13 / 15 / 17 and 19 championships respectively, with the finals taking place on Sunday afternoon.

In the Boys Under-19 final, defending champion, Gavin Cumberbatch, held off a spirited challenge from the rapidly improving Shawn Simpson to win 9/2 9/5 6/9 9/2. Tracy Roett won the Girl’s Under-19 title defeating Sherice MacDonald 6/9 9/1 9/0 9/0. Earlier in the afternoon MacDonald upset #2 seed Nadia McCarthy 9/0 9/2 7/9 9/5,to take the Under-17 title. The day before she had dismissed that age group’s #1 seed, Tracy Goodridge 9/2 10/9 6/9 9/2 to earn her place in the final. These outstanding performances from MacDonald earned her the award for Most Improved player of the tournament. The Boy’s Under-17 championship was a keenly contested affair, culminating with a 5-set final between the Cumberbatch brothers Rhett and Bryant, which Rhett eventually won 9/3 8/10 3/9 9/0 9/7.Steven Miller took third place defeating Jim Mark 9/3 10/8 6/9 10/9.

Alex Garcia played in both the Boy’sUnder-15 and Under-13 finals, losing the Under-15 title to Rhett Cumberbatch 9/1 9/0 9/1 and the Under-13 title to Bryant Cumberbatch, 9/0 9/0 9/0.
