Cumberbatch and Harris impress in Sagicor Junior Squash

Rhett Cumberbatch and Bo Harris were the most impressive players in the boys and girls events of the recently concluded Sagicor General Barbados Junior Squash Nationals. The National Junior Squash event has been hosted by the Barbados Squash Rackets Association (BSRA) almost every year since 1979, with this year?s event taking place from April 2nd ? 4th at the Barbados Squash Club in Hastings, Christ Church.

Bo Harris claimed the Under 15 title and also moved up to clinch the Under 19 title. Harris had commanding wins over Cheri-Ann Parris in the Under 15 and over the defending champion, Nadia McCarthy in the Under 19 division. Harris was a finalist in the Under 19 event in 2003 and has shown great improvement over the past year. Harris, a focussed and determined competitor and the reigning Under 15 Caribbean Champion, was voted the Most Improved Girl in the tournament and has set her name in the record books alongside Natalie Small (ne: Webber), both having won the Girls Under 19 category at the age of 14 years. Harris, along with fellow juniors Nadia McCarthy and Cherie Ann Parris, has earned an invitation to train with the National Senior Ladies Squad for 2004.

In a repeat of last year?s event, Rhett Cumberbatch, claimed two titles in the Junior Nationals (U17 and U19). Rhett defeated his brother, Bryant, in the finals of both age categories. The Cumberbatch pair have also been invited to train with the Senior Training Squad for 2004. Rhett gained selection to the senior squad for the first time in 2003.

The Ross brothers, Liu and Nkosi, were victorious in the Under 13 and Under 15 categories respectively while Moishe Steinbok was the winner in the Under 11 category. Other winners in the girl?s events were Nadia McCarthy (U17) and newcomers Tanya Marshall (Under 13) and Kennilee Ward (U11). Alex Jordan was awarded the Most Improved Boy for his performance.

The Barbados Squash Rackets Association (BSRA) expressed their gratitude to the sponsor Sagicor General, represented by Roger Spencer, who have been involved with the tournament for over 20 years (previously as Barbados Fire and General Insurance). The BSRA invites the general public to come out and enjoy the Barbados National Championships which is scheduled for April 21 to 24 (Veteran?s events) and May 3 to 8 (Open Category) at the Barbados Squash Club in Hastings (behind the Pommarine Hotel).
