Camcorder Details

The BSC owns a Canon VIXIA HF R500 camcorder (2014 model) that is mounted from the ceiling in Court 1. Court Attendants can grant access to the camera as needed.

Recordings must be saved onto your own personal SD Card in either MTS or MP4 formats (configurable via the camera’s touch-screen menu). The MTS format allows for a higher quality video.

SD Cards these days are actually Micro-SD Cards inserted into an SD Card adapter.

Any brand will do, but a 16 GB card will allow almost 2 hrs of storage at a high quality.  We recommend a 32 GB Class 10 SDHC (good) or SDXC (better) Card – minimum 30MB/s transfer rate.  See 32GB SDHC Card example.

The camcorder is typically set to record at 1920 x 1080 (HD), and the quality can adjusted up to 60P (60 frames per second) if desired.  The higher the quality, the better the ball can be viewed, but the larger the file becomes.  We recommend using the HIGHEST resolution (MTS file at 60P) in order to properly capture the fast-moving ball.

This is a perfect tool for coaching, improving one’s game or simply recording a match for posterity.

The saved files tend to be large as they lack efficient compression. To crop or convert/compress the video file on your PC, a free program called FreeMake will do the job just fine. There are other similar programs available for Mac, iPad and Android devices.

With FreeMake, you can trim and/or join files, and then convert/compress to an MP4 file. This file can be easily viewed on any device and it can also be easily uploaded to YouTube.
