At the 27th annual general meeting of the Barbados Squash Rackets Association (BSRA) held on May 29th a new Executive Council was elected for a one year term. The veteran sports administrator, Mr. Craig Archer, was elected unopposed to the position of President for his fourth stint and ninth year in all in this position.
Archer takes over the position vacated by Mr. Gavin Cumberbatch, the top ranked squash player in the Southern Caribbean, who became the acting President of the BSRA in January 2007 when the elected former President, Mr. Mylon Wason, unexpectedly resigned from office. Archer has served in a variety of administrative positions in squash over the past twenty years and is also a Director of the Barbados Olympic Association Inc. (BOA). A professional engineer by training, Archer also serves on the Executive of the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) and in November 2006 was also appointed onto the Technical Committee of the World Squash Federation (WSF). At the AGM he stated that he was enthusiastically looking forward to the year ahead and working with his new team to build on the achievements attained by the BSRA over the past twelve months. He will have as his Senior Vice-President, Mr. Orson Simpson, another seasoned sports administrator, who is also a keen squash player and cricketer, and is the current Treasurer of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA).
Mr. Laurie Parris was elected to the position of Junior Vice President and media executive Mr. Alex McDonald, was elected to the position of Secretary. Ms. Camille Nurse was elected to the post of Assistant (Recording) Secretary and 4-time national men’s champion, Mr. Shawn Simpson, a recent UWI graduate in Accounting, was returned unopposed as Treasurer.
The new Council Members for 2007 are: Mr. Gavin Cumberbatch and Mr. Richard Walcott, while Mr. Norman Rice was re-elected to this position for a second term. The BSRA’s Junior Representative continues to be Ms. Cheri-Ann Parris, the local under-17 and under-19 champion and current holder of the Caribbean girl?s under-17 title.
