Bronze Medal for Barbados at CAC Games 2014!
Brilliant play by the Barbados mixed doubles pair of Karen Meakins and Gavin Cumberbatch secured a bronze medal at the 2014 CAC Games in Veracruz, Mexico.
This is Gavin’s third bronze medal at the CAC Games, and all three have come in doubles. Karen now has won medals at three successive CAC Games – a feat that has only been done once before by a Barbadian athlete – and she has now has five CAC Games medals in all (1 silver, 4 bronze), which moves her into third place (behind swimmers Nicky Neckles and Bradley Ally) on the all-time list of medalists for Barbados at these multi-sports Games, which are held every four years under the Olympic umbrella.
Barbados has participated at every CAC Games held since 1962, but squash was only introduced as a medal sport at the CAC Games held in 2002 in San Salvador, El Salvador. After that initial outing Barbados won three (3) medals in squash in 2006 (in Cartagena, Colombia), then two (2) medals in 2010 (at the squash competition venue in Bogota, Colombia), then one more medal in Veracruz, Mexico in 2014. These six medals have moved squash into fifth position in the all time list of number of medals won by sport for Barbados (behind Athletics, Swimming, Boxing and Hockey).
