The 19th Southern Caribbean Squash Championships got underway on August 14th at the Barbados Squash Club (BSC), Marine Gardens, Hastings, Christ Church with the first two rounds played in the individual championships which will run from August 14-16th.

The top seeds in the Sagicor Ladies Individual Championships are as follows (B?dos players unless otherwise indicated):

Ladies: #1 Nicolette Fernandes (Guy); #2 Karen Meakins; #3 Jenny Armstrong; #4 Lilianna White; #5 Rhea Khan (T&T); #6 Cheri-Ann Parris; #7 Nadia McCarthy; #8 Joanna Scoon (T&T) and all made it safely through to the quarterfinals without dropping a single game between them.

On the other hand two of the top eight seeds in the Moorjani Caribbean (Barbados) Ltd. failed to progress. These seeds are as follows (B?dos players unless otherwise indicated):

The lanky Guyanese #5 seed Julian Chin could not keep the irrepressible Trinidadian, Ryan Abraham, at bay and eventually lost a closely fought 47 minute match 6/9 10/8 9/4 3/9 7/9 to the obvious delight of Abraham and his noisy Trinidadian cheering section. The other seed to fall was Barbadian Mark Sealy who relinquished a 2-0 8-7 lead to the Guyanese teenager, Kristian Jeffrey who fought off two match balls in the third game to win 6/9 7/9 10/8 9/1 9/4 in a 85 minute marathon that kept the packed court #1 audience on the edge of their seats.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be contested on Tuesday, August 15th beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until 9:00 p.m. All finals will be contested in the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, August 16th.

The eagerly anticipated team event between the men, ladies and veterans teams from Barbados, Guyana, the O.E.C.S. and Trinidad and Tobago will commence at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 17th.
