Barbadian players enjoyed mixed results as action got underway on Day 1 of the 32nd annual Junior Caribbean Squash Championships which got underway yesterday (Sunday) in Bermuda. After the opening ceremony was held in the morning action commenced in the individual competition which is being held in four age groups for both boys and girls: U-13, U-15, U-17 and U-19. Eleven Barbadian players took to the the courts on Sunday with five being successful and six losing after putting up good resistance. In the first round of the GU-13 age group both Sumairaa Suleman and Chelsea Samuels, who are on their first tour with the Barbados team, lost to higher ranked opponents from Trinidad but performed creditably. The top seed and defending Caribbean champion from Barbados, Meagan Best, had a first round bye and plays on Monday. In the BU-13 age group, the top seed and defending Caribbean champion from Barbados, Khamal Cumberbatch, eased into the quarter-finals with a comfortable 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 victory over Guyanese Anthony Islam. Darien Benn, however, lost his second round match to Bermudian, Kaleo Place in four games.
In the BU-15 age group, the #2 seed is Barbadian Shemane Griffith, who will get started on Monday afternoon, but team-mate Reggie Brewster got his campaign underway with an easy 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 victory over Trinidadian, Kobie Khan. The top seed in the GU-15 is Barbadian, Amanda Haywood, who finished runner-up last year and who will play her first match on Monday afternoon, along with the #2 seed in the GU-19 age group, Barbadian Gylla Mackenzie who also had a first round bye.
In the GU-17 age group, Barbadian Alyssa White lost in straight games to a higher ranked Bermudian opponent whereas Benjamin Griffith progressed to the last eight in the BU-17 competition with a convincing 3-0 victory over Trinidadian Jonathan Blanc, Roland Brewster Jr. enjoyed a hard fought victory in five games over Caymanian, Gyles Luke, 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 5-11, 11-9 while Zachary Proverbs-Harris lost to the formidable #3/4 seed from Guyana, Benjamin Mekdeci in straight games.
In the BU-19 age group Barbados’ National U-19 Champion, Stewart St. John, prevailed in straight games against Bermudian, Nazir Smith, while Brandon Straker pulled up with a leg injury and had to retire in the second game against Jamaican, David Mullins.
The individual championships will conclude tomorrow (Tuesday) July 15th and the team competition will begin the following day and conclude on Saturday evening. Barbados finished third in both the boys and girls team competitions last year behind double champions, Guyana, and second placed Jamaica.
