The Barbados boys and girls teams were both successful on the first day of team competition in the 32nd annual Junior Caribbean Squash Championships which continued yesterday (Wednesday) in Bermuda.
The boys team first defeated Cayman in the morning by three matches to two, with individual gold medalists Khamal Cumberbatch (U-13) and Josiah Griffith (U-15) as well as Stewart St. John (U-19) winning comfortably in three straight games while Benjamin Griffith (U-17) and Reggie Brewster, playing in the second U-19 slot both lost 0-3. Team Barbados returned to the court in the afternoon and duly defeated the short-handed OECS team by four matches to one, with Khamal Cumberbatch, Josiah Griffith, Reggie Brewster and Brandon Straker all winning easily without dropping a game. Benjamin Griffith (U-17) fought bravely but went down 0-3 to the runner-up in the individual competition, Jason Doyle. The boys team now face the undefeated Jamaican team today to determine who tops Pool B and faces the runner up in Pool A on Friday.
The Barbadian girls only had one tie on Wednesday but even though they were playing with only four players against Cayman were able to prevail by three matches to two, Caribbean championships Meagan Best (U-13) and Amanda Haywood (U-15) as well as Gylla Mackenzie (U-19) all won easily for Barbados in straight games, while Alyssa White lost her U-17 encounter to Alex Artuch 11-7, 4-11, 7-11, 3-11. The girls team will now face the short handed OECS team and then Jamaica later today (Thursday) to determine the final standings in this phase of the team event.
