proved she can still dominate Caribbean squash, with an awesome display of power and court agility. Meakins played well but did not have answers for the deft shots and amazing retrievals
by West. West will face Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana in a repeat of the 2001 final in Bahamas. West was victorious on that occasion, but will have her work cut out against the powerful Fernandes, who has been training full-time in England for the past year and a half.
Fernandes moved past an energetic Karen Anderson of Jamaica in the semi-final tie. Anderson and Meakins will meet in the third/fourth playoff.
In the Men’s semi-finals, the match of the day was definitely the battle between the No 2 seed Nick Kyme (Bermuda) and Shawn Badrinauth of Guyana. It was a gallant effort by Badrinauth but Kyme powered to a 3-2 victory. Badrinauth is no stranger to Court No 1 at the Barbados Squash Club having taken the Barbados Open title twice in the last two years. He was cheered on by both the Guyanese and local crowd and came ever so close to a berth in the finals.
Gary Plumstead (No 1) continued to impress spectators when he stopped Paul deVerteuil of Trinidad with the loss of only 5 points in three games. Plumstead will meet country man Kyme in the finals.
Gavin Cumberbatch of Barbados, playing in the Classic Plate, had a notable victory over
seasoned campaigner Wayne Burrowes of Jamaica in a tough five setter. The nail biting final game went to the wire with a 10-8 result.
