Local under-15 and under-19 champion, Cheri-Ann Parris, successfully defended her Caribbean Girl’s Under-15 individual title last night at the 23rd Junior Caribbean Squash Championships that are currently being contested at the Cascadia Squash Club in St. Ann’s, Trinidad.
Parris, who will turn 15 next month, did not drop a single game in any of her three matches in the individual competition and crushed her opponent in the finals, Daina King (Guyana) 9/2 9/0 9/1 to claim her third Junior Caribbean age group title in as many years. Samantha Hennings (Cayman) was third in this age group and Amy Gillezeau (Trinidad) placed fourth.
Fellow Barbadian teammate, Nadia McCarthy , placed third in the under-19 draw with a confident 6/9 9/5 9/2 9/5 win over another Guyanese opponent, Kristina King. The defending champion in this age group, Chantelle Day (Cayman) retained her title when her opponent in the final, Joanna Scoon (Trinidad), had to retire in the fourth game with an injury.
The other Barbadian to shine on finals day was Alex Garcia in the boy’s under-17 age group. Alex defeated Joe Chapman (OECS) 10/8 9/6 7/9 9/1 to clinch fifth place. The outstanding Christopher Binnie (Jamaica) defeated Kristian Jeffrey (Guyana) 3-1 to retain his Caribbean under-17 title. Josh Pinard (Trinidad) defeated Robert Maycock (Bermuda) 3-0 for third place.
None of the other six young Barbadian players on tour (i.e. Zoe Lisk, Melanie Mark, Kennilee Ward, Mikey Cox, Ryan Foster or Jonathan O’Dowd) made it through to finals day (see attached file for the full results) but all of the approximately 100 competitors from eight Caribbean territories (i.e. Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Cayman, Guyana, Jamaica, OECS and hosts Trinidad) will welcome the rest day today (Tuesday). The team competition commences tomorrow and will conclude on Saturday, July 30th. Barbados will be defending the overall and girls team titles while Jamaica will defend the boy’s team trophy.
Barbados is fielding a relatively young and inexperienced team this year and will be hard pressed to repeat as girl’s team champions but the newly appointed Barbados Team Manager, Mrs. Yvonne Parris, and Junior National Team Coach, Mr. Marlon White, are optimistic that the Barbados team will give a good account of themselves in Trinidad.
