On the final day of the veteran?s competition in the Barbados National Squash Championships, which is sponsored once again by the Barbados Olympic Association, the amazing Nigel “Dragon” Griffith, won his second age group title in as many days when he convincingly dispatched John Cumberbatch in straight games at the Barbados Squash Club (BSC), Marine Gardens, Christ Church (427-7913).
The top seeded Griffith, who is a former Caribbean over-40 champion and the reigning Southern Caribbean over-40 champion, had lost earlier in the year to Cumberbatch in the Inter-Club League, but was in a no nonsense mood in the Men’s over-40 final yesterday as he demolished the #2 seed for the loss of just six points: 9/2 9/3 9/1 in only 25 minutes. The former 8-time national champion, Mark Sealy, was in a similarly uncompromising mood as he dispatched the top seeded Marlon White in the Men’s over-35 final with a typically clinical display. After trading points back and forth in a relatively close first game Sealy won 21 consecutive points to move from 5/7 down in that game to 8/0 match ball up in the third. There was no way back for the nonplussed White who managed to avoid a second bagel before Sealy completed the rout 9/7 9/0 9/4 in 34 minutes to his obvious delight.
In the Men’s over-45 third place match Mickey Armstrong, comfortably defeated Cliff Nolan 9/5 9/6 8/10 9/5 while in the over-50 plate final Nick Paddison defeated Ronald Watson in four games to claim fifth place. In the Men’s over-55 round robin the top seed, Errol Pilgrim, defeated David Foster in straight games to win yet another over-55 title without dropping a single game in the tournament.
