In the ladies draw the top seed, Karen Meakins, will be aiming for an unprecedented seventh straight national title while on the Men’s side the three time defending champion, Shawn Simpson, has been seeded at #2 behind the top ranked player in the Southern Caribbean and champion in 2000, Gavin Cumberbatch.

In one of the more exciting first round matches played on the night in the Men’s Preliminary competition the recently crowned over-50 champion, Orson Simpson, was not tricky enough for the resilient Sylvester Nurse who prevailed in four hard fought games 9/1 0/9 9/3 9/6. In the longest match of the night Simpson?s fellow veteran Ronald Watson could not close out his younger and fitter opponent, James Punnett, who rallied back from a one game to two deficit before storming through the final two games to win 10/8 2/9 6/9 9/6 9/1 in just over 40 minutes.

Matches continue tonight at the BSC from 5:45 p.m. in the Men’s Preliminary competition and the Ladies Plate. The top eight Men’s seeds begin playing on Wednesday, May 9th.
