Meakins off to a winning start at the 10th WSF World Masters Championships

Karen Meakins, the ten time Barbados National Squash Champion and recently crowned 2010 Caribbean Ladies Champion, has got off to a winning start at the 10th World Squash Federation’s World Masters Championships being held from August 23-28th in Cologne, Germany.

Seeded at #5/8 in the Ladies Over-35 age group Meakins dismissed her unseeded first round opponent, Ayten Kececi, from Turkey 11-2, 11-2 11-0 in the round of 32 and now faces another unseeded opponent, from Slovakia in the round of 16 tomorrow at 8.20 a.m. Barbados time. If as expected she clears that hurdle then her next challenge should be in the quarter-finals where she is scheduled to face Peta Jan Murphy the #3 seed from Australia.

Karen noted this evening that she had ‘never seen so many squash players in one place! There are 15 courts at the main venue with matches all day long. I am totally inspired when I watch the players in the over 70 and over 75 age groupings who are

still active and very competitive!’

In all there are over 800 competitors in these biennial WSF World Masters Championships with competition for both men and ladies in the over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and over 75 age groups. There are 28 entries in the Ladies over-35 age group.
