CHANGES AT THE TOP OF BARBADOS SQUASH AS NEW PRESIDENT INSTALLED

Mr. Monty Cumberbatch, a well known hotel and business executive, was elected unopposed to be the 11th President of the Barbados Squash Association (BSA) at the 34th AGM of the Barbados Squash Association which was held on February 5th 2015.  Neither the former President, Craig Archer, who had held that office for the past seven years and for 15 years in total, nor the long standing Senior Vice President, Orson Simpson, sought re-election to those positions. After elections were held the full BSA Council for the 2015-16 period is now as follows:

In a press release issued to local and international media houses the incoming BSA President, Monty Cumberbatch, who is the patriarch of the squash playing Cumberbatch family, noted that he was excited about the future for squash and thanked the outgoing Council members for their service. “I think I have a very good team with me: a blend of experienced administrators and with now an injection of some new volunteers who I expect to bring fresh, new ideas to the table. Mark Sealy and Gavin Cumberbatch are now Senior and Junior Vice President respectively, while both the Secretary Don Benn and Treasurer Mrs. Rosie McCarthy were returned to their respective posts. There are now three more ladies added to Council, with Mrs. Chitra Samuel (Assistant Secretary); National Ladies Champion Ms. Karen Meakins and Mrs. Jo Haywood all being returned unopposed.  Both Marlon White and Craig Archer were also returned unopposed to their position as Council members.”

President Cumberbatch also noted that: “At our first Council meeting of this new term held last Wednesday night (February 18th) it was also agreed that Council member and former President, Craig Archer, would be also designated as the BSA’s  “International Delegate” due to his on-going and very active role on the Executive Committees of both the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) and the Pan American Squash Federation (FPS).”   “I would like to warmly thank both Craig Archer and Orson Simpson for their sterling contributions to the BSA over the past decade or more. I am positive that they will continue to serve the BSA whenever we call upon them to assist.”

Cumberbatch continued: “I am also confident that working as a closely knit and united team we will be able to accomplish many of our goals and continue the good work that the BSA has been able to achieve over recent years. One of our major tasks in 2015 will be to deliver an excellent Junior Caribbean Squash Championship here in Barbados from July 17th to 26th.  We are already hard at work planning for this event and we expect over 100 players, officials, parents and spectators to travel to Barbados in July to participate.”

Cumberbatch closed off his remarks to the media by stating: “On behalf of the BSA Council I would also like to thank our various stakeholders and corporate sponsors for their support for squash in Barbados over the years. We look forward to working closely with our various partners to further develop the game of squash in 2015 and beyond.”

Monty Cumberbatch
