2013 Senior CASA Results – Barbados 2nd Overall

Team results (held in Guyana) are as follows:

The Barbados Senior Squash Team comprising five ladies, six men, five veterans and two officials returns to Barbados from Guyana this afternoon (18th August) on LIAT 512 at 5 pm after performing credibly at the 21st Senior Caribbean Squash Championships which were held at the Georgetown Club from August 11-17th.

In the Individual Championships (held Aug 11-13th) the only Barbadian to finish in the top four was the #2 seed, Karen Meakins, who reached her seventh successive Caribbean individual final but lost in straight games to her Guyanese nemesis, Nicolette Fernandes, who played unbeaten throughout the week and who won for a record equaling 5th occasion. The men’s title was won for a record 4th time by the top seed Chris Binnie (JAM) who beat Sunil Seth (Guy) in the men’s final 3-1.

In the team championship that followed (Aug 14-17th) Barbados fared much better with the Veterans team finishing first for the third successive year. The Guyana vets team placed second with the OECS in third position. In their respective age groups each member of the Barbados team medalled. Lynn McLeod won her first L+50 Caribbean title while Nigel Griffith placed second to M+50 champion Brendan Mounter (GUY). Barbadian, Ayoni Bradshaw (L+40) who was on her first tour, did very well and finished with a silver medal with Jillian Griffith-Lilico (GUY) placing first. The two time defending M+40 champion, Mark Sealy (BAR) slipped to third place behind winner James Bentick (OECS) and silver  medalist Garfield Wiltshire (GUY). In the M+60 age group, Leon Truss (BAR) finished runner up to Trinidad’s Richard Hart who successfully defended his title.

The Barbados ladies team only had two ties in a round robin of three teams.  First Barbados defeated Jamaica by four matches to one and then lost to Guyana 1-4 on Saturday morning with only Nadia McCarthy winning at position #4 versus Ashley deGroot in five close games. The Guyana Ladies team finished in first place for the first time ever, with Barbados 2nd and Jamaica 3rd. The other Barbados team members were: #1 Karen Meakins, #2 Alex Jordan, #3 Gylla Mackenzie, #4 Nadia McCarthy, #5 Amanda Haywood.

The Barbados men’s team was in a round robin of six team but found the going rough. Barbados lost 0-5 to Jamaica and 1-4 to Trinidad and Tobago, 1-4 to Guyana and 1-4 to Cayman. Barbados beat the OECS 5-0 and finished 5th to leave the OECS with the wooden spoon. The strong Guyana men’s team finished in top spot for the seventh time with Cayman second and Jamaica third and Trinidad and Tobago fourth. The Barbados men’s team comprised: #1 Gavin Cumberbatch; #2 Shawn Simpson; #3 Bryant Cumberbatch; #4 Rhett Cumberbatch; #5 Zaki Williams and #6 Stewart St. John.

In the overall team category Guyana placed first deposing defending champs Barbados who were second with Jamaica third. Next year’s 22nd senior CASA Squash Championships will be in August (2014) in Barbados.
