The Barbados Squash Club’s first In-House league for 2009 came to an exciting conclusion on Friday (March 20th) evening. The event which was sponsored by Diamonds International, took place over 3 weeks with 7 teams competing against each other.

Six of the seven teams competed for places on the final night. The unfortunate “Yellow Submarines” led by Captain Karen Meakins had lost every match except the last which ruled them out of the final night of play. Despite not placing, the Yellow Submarines clearly had the noisiest support, thanks mainly to Frank Jordan and were happy to come out on Friday to show off their vocals!!!

In the play-off for fifth/sixth place, “Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts” led by Captain Mark Sealy, edged out “Helter Skelter” led by Captain Jeanette Cullen 3-2. Jeanette had to support her team on crutches after damaging her knee in her match against Frank Jordan earlier in the week.

The third/fourth play-off was also a close affair, with the “Day Trippers” led by “Captain Competitve” Ashok Merai edging out “Get Back” led by captain Tony MacKenzie 3-2.

In the final, the “Working Class Heroes” led by Captain Jason Small were trying to overturn their defeat earlier in the week against the seasoned “Twist & Shout” led by Captain Leon Truss. After losing the first two matches, Jason Small put up a spirited performance against Nigel “The Dragon” Griffith, but eventually lost 14-12 in the fifth. “Twist and Shout” went on to win the tie 4-1, who with an average age of 50, showed that experience can often outlast youth!

Thanks to Jason Small for all his hard work in organising the tournament and also to Diamonds International for providing prizes for every competitor. We look forward to the next league……
