After a week of intense play at the Barbados Squash Club in Hastings, Andy Gill and Karen Meakins, seeded No 1 in Men and Ladies play respectively have reached the finals of the 2004 Barbados National Squash Championships, sponsored by the Barbados Olympic Association.. Their opponents, the No 2 seeds who also made it through unscathed, Shawn Simpson and Sonia Perkins.
Andy Gill, the defending champion will have his hands full with the powerful play of his younger opponent, Shawn Simpson. Both players have excellent reach but their contrasting styles should provide an interesting encounter. Gill, known for his slower play with well crafted shots and Simpson, for his hard hitting play. Gill defeated Marlon White, 3-0 in semi final action while Simpson overcame former 8 time National Champion, Mark Sealy in four games.
Meakins will be looking for her fourth consecutive National title when she takes to the court Saturday against Perkins. Meakins has been unbeaten in local squash for several years and wasted little time moving by up and coming junior Bo Harris in three straight games in the semis. Perkins defeated junior Nadia McCarthy, also in three straight games, in the other semi final.
