The veterans competitions in this year?s National Squash Championships, sponsored by the Barbados Olympic Association, got underway last night (Wednesday) at the Barbados Squash Club (BSC), Marine Gardens , Hastings .
In the Senior Ladies Open, for ladies 35 years and over, the top seed Sonia Perkins played twice and easily won both her matches in straight games, against Audre Spence and Cyla Seale. Former champion jockey Perkins defeated Spence 9/2 9/1 9/2 and then followed up by cantering past Seale 9/0 9/2 9/5.
In the
Men’s Over-50 competition the #2 seed, Richard Walcott defeated Chester Haynes 9/0 9/3 9/0, while Orson Simpson defeated Nick Paddison 9/5 9/6 9/0 and David Foster defeated Ronald Watson 9/1 9/0 9/1 in convincing fashion.
In the one match played in the Men’s Over-45 competition, Cliff Nolan had to work hard to overcome Richard Taylor 10/8 5/9 9/4 9/1 in 35 minutes, the longest match of the night.
In the first round of the Men’s Over-40 event Dean Straker and Brian Robinson both won by default when their respective opponents, Ricky Edwards and Mickey Armstrong failed to show up. In other Over-40 action, Roger Martin defeated Michael Best 9/7 9/1 9/0 and Andre Donawa looked comfortable for the first two games and then lost concentration in the third but recovered to prevail over the left handed Peter Raymer 9/1 9/2 9/10 9/1.
In the Men’s Over-35 competition Mark Sealy took on two different opponents last night and had the beating of both of them. First Sealy, the former eight time National Squash Champion, outplayed Jason Small 9/2 9/3 9/3 and then went back on court to defeat Martin Bynoe 9/3 9/4 9/1.
Competition continues at the BSC from 5:45 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on tonight (Thursday) and Friday. All veteran?s finals will be played between 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2005 . Spectators and the press are welcome.
