Top seeds to serve off on Monday

Multiple B’dos Open winners Karen Meakins & Shawn Badrinath

The draw for the 2006 Playfair / Federal Bookmakers Barbados Squash Open was completed over the weekend and the top players in the Ladies’ and Men’s ‘A’ competitions will get underway on Monday June 19th. There are 15 ladies and 16 men entered in these two events.

The men’s top seed and defending champion, Shawn Badrinath (Guyana) should have few problems with local squash administrator, Craig Archer, in his first match. Last year’s beaten finalist Steve Smith (Jamaica) is seeded at #4 this year and will face John Cumberbatch in the first round. The #2 seed, Gavin Cumberbatch will match up against top local junior, Alex Garcia, while the #3 seed and national champion, Shawn Simpson will face a stern test from Fabian Goodridge who is making a return to squash this year after an absence of two years from the game.

In the Ladies competition, the top seed Karen Meakins has a first round bye, while #2 seed Sonia Perkins will face newcomer, Paula Yarde. All eyes will be on the British National Under-17 Champion, Victoria Lust, who will face Edna Corbette. Local #3 player, Lilianna White faces former local junior champion, Tracy Roett.

The tournament begins at 5:00 p.m. on Monday June 19th at the Barbados Squash Club, Marine Gardens and continues from 5:00 p.m. each evening until Friday June 23rd.
