Young brigade too good for old guard in B’dos Open

The speed and agility of the youthful Fabian Goodridge and Alex Garcia proved too much for their experienced opponents as action continued in the Playfair Ltd. / Federal Bookmakers Barbados Squash Open on Thursday night, June 22nd at the Barbados Squash Club (BSC), Marine Gardens, Hastings, Christ Church.

The 22 year old Goodridge, nephew of local squash legend Rudy Goodridge, won his only national boy?s under-19 title in 2002 and has been off the local squash scene for almost three years but looked as though he had never been away as he comprehensively demolished the experienced national senior player, Marlon White, in four games 9/0 9/5 5/9 9/6. The current under-19 champion, Alex Garcia, also proved to be too much of a handful for national team stalwart, John Cumberbatch, and also won in four games 9/3 9/7 2/9 9/7.

In the ladies playoffs for 5th place, Lilianna White comfortably snuffed out the challenge of Caymanian, Chantelle Day, the Caribbean Under-19 champion 9/7 9/1 9/3 while the local Under-17 and Under-19 champion, Cheri-Ann Parris, had to work a little harder against fellow local junior team mate, Nadia McCarthy, before winning an error filled match in four games 9/4 8/10 9/6 9/5.

In the Men’s B semi-finals also played last night (Thursday) Cliff Nolan played amazingly well to defeat Mickey Armstrong 3-0 while Tariq Williams (Guyana) once again let a 2-0 lead slip away but just managed to hold off Fredrik Crouzet (Martinique) in five close games.
