The finals of the individual event in the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships were played at the Georgetown Club on Monday evening before an excited crowd. A delighted Monty Cumberbatch, Manager of the team reported that Cherie Ann Parris, Bo Harris and Bryant Cumberbatch of Barbados reaped success in the Girls Under 13, Girls Under 15 and Boys Under 15 categories respectively.
Cherie Ann defeated arch rival Daina King of Guyana in three straight games while last year’s Under 13 champion, Bo, defeated Laura Robinson of Bermuda in four games. Bryant defeated the continuously improving Chris Binnie of
Jamaica, also in four games. These excellent performances y Bo, Cherie Ann and Bryant are sure to inspire the team as they move into the team competition.
In the Girls Under 17 final, Nadia McCarthy of Barbados put up a determined fight before succumbing to Kristina King of Guyana in four close games. Akil Ross and Rhett Cumberbatch took third place in the boys Under 13 and Under 17 competition respectively.
The Bajans are the defending champions in the team competition but will have to work hard this year with the stiff opposition posed by the Caribbean nations. Team coach, Richard Walcott, has faith I his young charges to give of their best after several months of intense training and preparation.
