Guyana complete clean sweep in Junior Squash (Starbroek News)

The Guyanese Junior Squash Team stamped their authority in regional squash when they claimed victory in both the girls and boys team events, as the Western Union/Supligen Caribbean Junior Squash Championships culminated last evening at the Georgetown Club. Guyana?s President Bharat Jagdeo was on hand to witness some of the action and congratulate the players, both local and foreign.

The Guyanese lasses defeated Barbados 4-1 in their round robin fixture to retain the girl?s title while the Guyanese boys defeated Bermuda by a similar margin in the final. Guyana last made a clean sweep of the titles in 1984 when Jamaica hosted the championships. In 2001 before a home crowd The Barbados / Guyana girls clash was deemed the final of the girl?s event, since although the tournament was of round robin format both the Guyanese and Barbadian teams were undefeated before their encounter.

A pleased team manager, Guyana?s former No 1 player, Garfield Wiltshire said the victories in the girls finals were not surprising. The manager said he was confident Guyana would have come out on top but was expecting a 3-2 victory while King?s win against Parris, resulted in a 4-1 victory.

In the boys team event Barbados stole past Jamaica 3-2 to finish third in the boys championships while Trinidad and Tobago scored a 3-2 victory over Jamaica to finish third in the girls team championships.

Guyana will be seeking to earn additional titles at the Senior Caribbean Championships which will be hosted in Barbados in August 2003.
