Gill is National Squash Champion

Barbados National Championships

The conclusion of the 2003 Squash Nationals on Sunday saw Andy Gill clinching the title of National Champion for the first time in his squash career.

Gill advanced to the final with wins over Rhett Cumberbatch and Nigel Griffith in the quarters and finals respectively. 19 year old Shawn Simpson reached the finals with wins over John Cumberbatch and Marlon White. 33 year old Gill drawing on his experience slowed down the game and took control of the match from the start.? Simpson, finding himself forced into a slow pace game, had some brilliant forehand nick shots but made several unforced errors and succumbed 3-0 to the steadier game and good use of the court by Gill.

In a repeat of last year’s final, Karen Meakins defeated Sonia Perkins 3-0 in the Ladies championship match.?? The victory sealed a triple crown for Meakins who was the champion in 2001 and 2002. Meakins, with her trademark tight game and excellent volleys, used a mix of hard cross courts and deep floating straight drives to complete a convincing victory.
