Top Squash Seeds to Clash Tonight

The Men”s seedings for numbers nine to sixteen held up last night as all eight of the seeded men won their respective third round matches and progressed to the Men”s Main Draw in the Trident Insurance Barbados Squash Open. Only two of the Men”s 9/16 seeds dropped any games at all last night (Tuesday) at the Barbados Squash Club?s (BSC) Marine Gardens courts, with the match of the night being encounter between the local under-17 and Caribbean under-15 champion, Bryant Cumberbatch, who had to come back from 0-2 down to prevail against the Jamaican under-19 champion, David Patterson, by three games to two 6/9 4/9 9/2 9/2 9/3 in 55 minutes.

In the other close match, Barbadian Marlon White, dropped the first game against the improving Guyanese under-17 junior, Kristian Jeffrey, before roaring back to win in four games 3/9 9/6 9/1 9/3 in 40 minutes. In other matches played last night in the plate, prominent local attorney, Barry Gale, outlasted local junior, Steven Miller in five games while in a big upset the local under-13 champ Liu Ross came back from 0-2 down to defeat under-19 player Jonathan Foster in five games 6/9 0/9 9/0 9/7 9/4.

All eight of the ladies seeds are in action tonight (Wednesday) June 23rd at the Barbados Squash Club?s courts in Marine Gardens, Christ Church, in the Ladies quarterfinals beginning from 5:45 p.m. The top ladies seeds are #1 Ruchika Kumar from Canada who will face Kathy Shuffler from Guyana; #2 Karen Meakins, the four time national champion, who will face Gen Shim (Trinidad); #3 Karen Anderson (Jamaica) the Caribbean?s #4 player who will take on Barbadian Andrea Goodridge, while former local champion jockey, Sonia Perkins, who is the national ladies captain, is seeded #4 in this tournament and will match up against Lilianna White.

The top eight Men”s seeds will also play tonight in the first round of the Men”s Open. This will be the first chance for local fans to see the top two Men”s seeds, Johan Bouquet and Arthur Poupel, both from France, who will take on Canadian-based Guyanese Ray Chan-a-Sue and Barbadian Marlon White respectively. The other top Men”s seeds are: #3, the two-time defending champion, Shawn Badrinath (Guyana); at #4 the top local player and captain of the Yale University squash team, Gavin Cumberbatch; St. Lucian, Charlie Sonson, is at #5 while the recently crowned local national squash champion, Shawn Simpson, is at #6. Barbados” national squash captain, Andy Gill at #7, and Guyanese Robert Fernandes at #8 round out the top eight Men”s seeds.

Admission to the Barbados Squash Club (BSC) is free and refreshments are always on sale at the bar there. All spectators are welcome.
